The file picker accepts: text/plain, */*. The contents and encoding of the file must also be supported; an extension alone does not guarantee compatibility.

What to expect
Compare the result with a reference made using the same algorithm and the same input. A changed byte or line ending changes the digest. A matching checksum does not, by itself, establish who created a file.
SHA-1 is retained for compatibility. It is collision-prone and should not be selected for a new security-sensitive design.
